Antique blue enamel gold collar and locket, c1840
We’ve never seen anything quite like this stunning antique enamel collar and locket. It was probably made in Switzerland in the early 19th century.
It’s composed of a series of elaborate and vibrant blue enamelled 18-carat yellow gold panels joined by foxtail link chains top and bottom, with a sturdy clasp contained in three joined panels at the back.
The locket is exactly matched for colour to the necklace but it’s possible it may not have started life there, as its floral motif is not echoed in the more classically inspired panels.
It does look lovely there now but could be removed to wear on another chain either at the same time or on another occasion. It retains its original glass.
The enamel is in very good condition, with the exception of the back of the locket (not visible when worn), a few light scratches to the locket front, and some unevenness in finish to a few of the links at the back – all not easily seen.
This is a true collar, measuring 13 1/4 inches (34cm), and will only fit a fairly slender neck.
The panels and locket are exquisitely engraved, providing a rich counterpoint to the glowing lapis lazuli-like blue of the enamel.
