Tiffany & Co sterling silver trinket box, made in 1886
This magnificent Tiffany & Co trinket box was previously owned by a collector of boxes who investigated its origins.
In a 2000 letter the company confirmed it was made in 1886 under the direction of Edward Chandler Moore, its chief silver designer from 1868 to 1891.
Moore, whose father John was an acclaimed silversmith, was himself a noted collector and benefactor.
A 2024 exhibition – Collecting Inspiration: Edward C Moore at Tiffany & Co – at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art will feature more than 180 examples from his collection, alongside 70 silver objects created at Tiffany during his tenure there.
“A defining figure in the history of American silver, Moore played a pivotal role in shaping the legendary Tiffany design aesthetic and the evolution of The Met’s collection,” the museum says.
I love this box’s weight and solidity, the lavishly embossed wreath of oak leaves and acorns – tied with a bow – and its pristine gilt interior.
