Early Victorian pansy brooch, c1845
This exquisite little jewelled pin in the form of a pansy was made in the early Victorian period from amethysts, citrines, turquoise and rich 15-carat yellow gold.
These are increasingly hard to find. There is a similar example (as pictured) in the Hull Grundy Collection at the British Museum.
Botanists were breeding violas into pansies at this time, one of the reasons for their popularity in early 19th century jewellery, apart from their intrinsic beauty and their link to the French word pensé and the phrase pensé a moi – “think of me”.
And citrine is thought to attract wealth and success, amethyst is associated with spiritual healing, calmness and wisdom, and turquoise is thought to bring luck and ward off negative energy – piling on the symbolism in one petite pin!
The stones are open set and have pretty looped filigreed gallery surrounds. We love the beautiful texture and shape of the leaves and stem.
The tiny size just adds to its feeling of preciousness.
