Antique Australian opal brooch by Duggin and Shappere, c1890

$1,450.00

Here’s one for appreciators of Victorian romantic jewellery.

Two swallows – symbolising faithfulness, as swallows mate for life – set with lustrous natural seed pearls carry in their beaks a heart within a heart.

The central heart-shaped solid Australian crystal opal dangles from a bale, its constant movement maximising the colour play.

This appealing brooch from about 1890 is stamped with an anchor and a fleece, the marks of the renowned Melbourne jewellers Duggin and Shappere, surrounding a 15, which denotes the gold purity.

The company was one of very few local jewellers whose work was on a par with English firms.

They used first-rate gemstones, as shown in the locally sourced colourful opal. Most good opals were sent overseas, as remains true today.
