Edwardian Pailin sapphire and diamond cluster ring, c1915
This lovely example of an early 20th century sapphire and diamond cluster ring features a central cushion-shaped untreated Pailin sapphire of about 1.45 carats. It’s surrounded by an oval border of good quality early modern brilliant cut diamonds.
All the stones are set in fine bezels, bestowing a delicate scalloped outline. The delicate touch extends to the bezel-set sapphire, too.
That fineness is the defining difference between Victorian and Edwardian jewellery. Platinum was the newly discovered enabler. Far less metal is needed than silver to securely hold the precious stones in place.
There being no claws to catch on delicate fabrics is another plus.
Appealing from all angles, including the delicate supporting structure, this ring sits low on the finger too, a look that many of us love in antique rings.
